Brick Lane Curry House

Ashley and I are big fans of Indian cuisine, so we decided to go to a place close to our hotel, and a place that the Fommer's guide suggested because we're here discovering New York without a guide.

They started us off with some complimentary chutneys  There was a tamarind, cilantro, and an onion tomato chutney.  My favorite was the tamarind, Ashley's too.

We looked over the menu as we ate our chutney and cracker and saw many things that looked familiar and we wanted to try something new, and something familiar.  The waiter suggested that we try an appetizer to get started and he suggested Lassuni Gobi.  Lassuni Gobi is a breaded and fried cauliflower dipped in a tomato and garlic sauce with a little side salad.  I'm not a huge fan of cauliflower, but I could tell that Ashley wanted to try it, so we ordered it.  It was exceptional, and the best thing we ate today

Lassuni Gobi 10/10

We ordered garlic naan, and onion kulcha.  We ordered shrimp saag, and goat goan.  And it came with white long grain rice.

Shrimp Saag is a spinach based dish with onion and fenugreek.  It's a green curry dish.  Goat goan is a coconut curry with green chilies, coriander and vinegar.  It's an orange curry dish.

The garlic naan was too strong.  Someone needs to let New York know that a little bit of garlic goes a long way.  I should have expected that it would be too strong after the garlic bites from Lisa Pizza.  The Onion Kulcha was really good, I would get that again.  The rice was the most disappointing part of the meal.  It was a long grain white rice, and it didn't add anything to the meal.  I love the rice at my favorite Indian restaurant (India Palace).  The goat goan was really good.  It had a really rich earthy flavor with a little kick.  The down side, they left the bones on the goat meat.  The shrimp saag was good, but not great.  I did like the texture of the dish, it was very organic, but the flavor was lacking, and they left the tails on the shrimp.

Garlic Naan 5/10
Onion Kulcha 8/10
Shrimp Saag 6/10
Goat Goan 8/10

The over all service started out great, but by the time we were finishing up, we seemed to have been forgotten.  I'm going to give Brick Lane Curry House a 7/10.  It wasn't anything special, and I was expecting Indian food from New York to be better than Indian food in Provo, but if you were to ask me where I would prefer to get my Indian cuisine, I would tell you India Palace on Center Street in Provo.

Happy Eating
